over the years i have rubbed elbows or had opportunities to meet, interview or hand out with a lot of musicians.
in high school i was in the bands: static farm, reggae disciples, hks, dead souls as well as several small group jazz ensembles. friends were in bands like crock o'dookey, hairy carrie, aggressive chubbies, drednex, hollowmen, house of larges, uwtb, primitive ritual, swingin' teens and more. our local promoter brought in lots of cool bands like the dead milkmen, social unrest, the muskrats, roger miller (mission of burma), bgk, black flag, gone and more. met the crazy 8s in ames, iowa where they were playing at the maintenance shop. attempted to converse with henry rollins when they played the boat house in '86.
while in boston i was at berklee at the same time as delfao marsalis. juliana hatfield and her band the blake babies hung out there. scruffy the cat rehearsed a block away. along with the blake babies - think tree was one of the local bands i saw many times. a constant flow of great jazz names flowed in andd out of berklee: john scofield, emily remler, john abercrombie, bill evans (sax player) and others. at a new music seminar i met german industrialists strafe fur rebellion also fred frith.
in college my contemporaries were the warlock pinchers, twice wilted, 40th day, again, big head todd and the samples. also knew local acts like the fluid, architects office, little fyodor, naram sin. played in the dead orbisons, human document and the chance gardeners. i also worked at college radio station kucb which opened the door to get comped into shows for the purpose of getting station ids and interviews.
my first phone interview was with downy mildew. i interviewed straightjacket bazooka at the grove. nice strong arm played quigleys. interviewed bad brains guitarrist dr. know while he did his laundary at their hotel in denver (the show was at the aztlan).
got an id from firehose at the aztlan as well. was invited onto the bus to interview acts like concrete blonde, psychic tv and voivod. had a conversation with the guys from spk in my car as i drove them to their hotel. spent time with chris & cosey before and after their show at rock island. interviewed hetch hetchy in the basement of 23 parrish. had anthony from fishbone dj at our station one afternoon. interviewed derrick bostrom of the meat puppets on campus. hung out with that petrol emotion after their show at the glen miller ballroom. interviewed the sugarcubes (minus bjork) on campus. interviewed black uhuru in their hotel room. and the stories go on.
when we lived in dayton i did meet phil collins. and later in iowa i had the chance to meet ladysmith black mambazo. i also interviewed with christafari, aradhna, michael card for a publication i produced.
i still rub shoulders from time to time with musicians big and small. many acquaintances and friends from the past have made names for themselves in the realm of musical some greater than others.
